3W Framework: what, why, what’s next

The 3W Framework is a simple, repeatable structure for writing product updates that are easy to read and hard to ignore. It helps you share the right level of information—without overloading people—with a format that’s clear, fast, and action-oriented.

Here’s how it works:

1. What we did

Start with the facts. One or two sentences that describe what changed, shipped, or moved forward. Be clear and specific, but not overly detailed. This sets the baseline.

Example: We released the new onboarding flow to 50% of new users.

2. Why it matters

Explain the impact or reasoning. Why did this work matter? What’s the significance? This shows stakeholders you’re thinking critically, not just shipping for the sake of it.

Example: This helps us validate whether shorter onboarding increases activation without hurting completion rates.

3. What’s next

Point forward. Are you monitoring results? Scaling up? Waiting for feedback? This part sets expectations and keeps momentum going.

Example: Next, we’ll review the data midweek and aim to roll out to all users on Friday.

Why use it?

It reduces ambiguity, respects attention spans, and makes you easier to follow and trust. It’s especially useful for async updates, Slack threads, stakeholder emails, and team recaps.

Simple structure, big clarity. That’s the power of the 3W.
